Our Advanced Diagnostic and Minimally Invasive Treatments for Urogenital Conditions
Many urinary conditions are difficult to identify because of their location within the abdomen and the overlapping of surrounding tissues. To ensure a precise diagnosis, we combine high-resolution ultrasound with CT scanning. This combination of diagnostic technologies allows us to; Detect ureteral stones, identify ectopic ureters (abnormal positioning of the ureter), assess bladder stones and urinary tract obstructions.
Early and accurate detection of these conditions is critical to prevent complications such as urinary blockage, renal pelvis distension and irreversible kidney damage.
At Elizavet, we are proud to offer advanced endoscopic solutions for complex urinary conditions.
Ectopic ureter is a congenital abnormality in which the ureter does not connect to the bladder in the normal position, often leading to urinary incontinence and recurrent infections. Using minimally invasive endoscopy and laser, we can correct the ureter’s placement without the need for open surgery. This approach reduces pain, speeds recovery, and minimises the risk of complications compared to traditional methods.
For pets suffering from bladder stones, we can perform endoscopically assisted stone removal, which:
- Allows for precise removal of stones with minimal tissue disruption
- Shortens recovery time and hospital stay
- Reduces the need for large incisions compared to conventional surgery
When stones block the ureter and urine cannot pass into the bladder, a kidney stent or a SUB may be required. This advanced procedure allows urine to flow directly from the kidney to the bladder, bypassing the blockage.
The key benefits of SUB surgery include:
- Relief from pain caused by urinary obstruction
- Prevention of kidney damage and preservation of kidney function
- Improved quality of life by restoring normal urine flow
- A long-term solution for pets prone to recurrent stones
Hospitalisation and post-surgery care
Following any major urinary surgery, including SUB, all patients must remain hospitalised for a minimum of 24 hours for close monitoring. During this period, our veterinary team monitors vital signs, urine output, and kidney function, provides pain management, antibiotics, and intravenous fluids, and ensures all stents or bypass systems are functioning correctly. This careful observation helps detect early complications and ensures a safe, comfortable recovery.
Complications and recovery
While our procedures are highly effective, as with any advanced surgery, there are potential risks, including infection of the urinary tract or surgical site, stent or bypass blockage requiring future intervention, and device-related irritation or the need for long-term monitoring. Most pets experience pain relief within 24–48 hours, regain normal activity levels within 1–2 weeks, and require follow-up imaging to ensure the surgical repair or device remains functional.
